Seafoam pipe. Hand engraved on a mineral (hydrous magnesium silicate) mined near the city of Eskişehir in Turkey. Hydrous magnesium silicate is an opaque white-gray or cream mineral of the soapstone family and is known as meerschaum. The tradition of the meerschaum pipe has been widespread in Austria and Germany since at least the 18th century and still flourishes in Turkey. Due to the porous nature of the meerschaum, moisture and tobacco tar are drawn deep into the stone. As they are smoked, meerschaum pipes gradually change color and old meerschaum pipes will take on gradual shades of yellow, orange, red and amber from the base up.
Dimensions 13.50/6.50/5.00 cm.
