The Atabey brand was officially introduced in 2010, founded by Nelson Alfonso, world famous for his projects such as the branding of Habanos cigars, the design of the 50th anniversary humidor for Padron and many others. He has the talent to make extremely good blends. Atabey cigars are admirable, the wrapper is an Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade with perfect smoothness and a slight satin sheen, the construction is perfect, the flavor profile is complex, with a wide range of aromas of cedar, pepper, nuts, cocoa and light floral undertones. These cigars go through a rigorous aging process. For five years, they are left to “rest” in a room lined with five different types of cedar (Cuban, Spanish, Lebanese, Brazilian and Mexican) in a variable range of humidity, thus taking on the unique cedar aromas. They are produced in Costa Rica in very limited quantities and can only be purchased in a few stores around the world that are certified by the manufacturer. Atabey cigars are named after the mother goddess of the Taínos Indians, the indigenous people who occupy much of the Caribbean islands.

As the catchy name suggests, this Asylum 13 is an unusual size: 69 ring diameter and 4 inches long. A great cigar for those who like big, but not so long cigars. Made entirely of Nicaraguan tobaccos with a dark and aromatic wrapper. It has a slow and cool burn, medium to strong, with aromas of cocoa and espresso, sweet natural notes and gentle spices.

1502 Cachitos are 4″x 50″ short cigars that are great for quick smoking. They feature a round candela on top of the cap. The hood features a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper that covers Honduran binder tobacco and Nicaraguan and Honduran fillers. Medium to strong with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, almonds, leather and black pepper.

Tatuaje Black Label Private Reserve (aka Tatuaje Black Label) is produced by the Garcia family at the My Father Cigars factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. Made entirely of Nicaraguan tobaccos, a strong cigar wrapped in Nicaraguan Sun-Grown Criollo, it has a nice spicy profile complemented by natural sweetness and hints of cinnamon. This blend was originally a private blend of Tatuaje Cigars founder Pete Johnson that he only offered at special events before it hit the market.

Translated from Spanish, “Liga Privada” means “private mixture”. This name is no accident, as this cigar was originally made not for commercial purposes, but for the personal humidors of Drew Estate. A boutique blend made from seven types of aged tobacco from seven different plantations. The wrapper leaf is Connecticut broadleaf. The tobacco leaves go through a fermentation process for more than 18 months. After that, the finished cigars are aged for another year before being offered for sale. The result of this long and precise process is a magnificent cigar, medium to strong, with spicy notes of espresso and earthy aromas. They are produced in limited quantities and are deservedly ranked among the top cigars of 2013.
