Following the tremendous success of Blackened “M81” – “Maduro to the Core” in 2022, Drew Estate announced the release of a new cigar line, Blackened “S84” – “Shade to Black,” wrapped in Connecticut Shade. The cigars are once again a collaborative project between Rob Dietrich, master distiller of Blackened Whiskey; James Hetfield, co-founder, singer, and guitarist of Metallica; and Jonathan Drew, founder and president of Drew Estate. Hetfield and Dietrich worked closely with Jonathan Drew—who has been Dietrich’s friend for more than a decade—to create the perfect blend for Blackened “S84” – “Shade to Black.”
The result is a delightfully smooth and enticing blend.
Unlike the M81, the wrapper here is an Ecuador-grown Connecticut Shade, while the binder is again Connecticut River Valley Broadleaf Maduro, and the fillers remain Nicaraguan and Pennsylvania Broadleaf Maduro. The change of wrapper in S84 Shade to Black delivers a wonderful, smooth, and balanced medium-bodied smoking experience, with rich notes of espresso, dark chocolate, and leather, complemented by the subtle creaminess of the wrapper.
The “S” in the name refers to the cigar’s wrapper (Shade), “84” is the year Metallica released their album Ride the Lightning, and “Shade to Black” is a reference to the song “Fade to Black” from that album.
